Football Academy trains Union county athletes for success on the playing field Indian Trail, N.C. 12/04/2008 – 40 plus youth athletes crowded a gym in Indian Trail last Tuesday night as they began a six month training program called the “Football Academy” conducted by Union County Sports. The players ranging in age from seven to fourteen, reported for training from cities all over south Charlotte in hopes of taking their game to the next level. The focus of the training is to provide improved speed, agility and coordination for youth athletes, while teaching the fundamentals and specific techniques needed to excel at football. The training is conducted by area coaches Erik Saunders and Mike Vagnone, both of whom currently volunteer in the Porter Ridge Pop Warner football program. The men have a combined thirty years of experience and have trained athletes professionally for the past two years in Union County. Training sessions are conducted on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Indian Trail area. The program does charge a monthly fee of $49 dollars per month and offers several options for participants to customize the length of their training. Many of the participants are in their second season of training with Union County Sports and several have expressed their thoughts regarding the training on the company’s website. Fred Clark of Mint Hill has two sons aged 12 and 11 in the Academy and he stated "As a father, I have always taken a keen interest in the coaching and training my sons have received. Regarding the training they attended this past summer, which was put on by Coaches Saunders and Vagnone, I feel they both gained a great deal of knowledge concerning first steps, direction of first steps, how to gain a half step of speed by having the entire body act as one. The coaches showed them how to make the leap to gaining that half a step or even full step on their competition. That advantage is huge and makes this camp well worth the time and effort." The training program is scheduled to run through May of 2009 and area athletes can join at anytime during the program.
